Union College Concerts: Mitsuko Uchida, piano | Mozart, Schumann, Widmann

Union College Concerts continues its 2016-17 season with the first of two concerts by the venerable pianist Mitsuko Uchida.

Uchida’s annual sold-out performances at Carnegie Hall and solo appearances with the world’s top orchestras have placed her at the forefront of pianists today. Her first program of the two programs for the Union College series features classic works by composers she has championed throughout her illustrious career.

The program is to include:

  • W.A. Mozart — Sonata in C Major, K. 545
  • Robert SchumannKreisleriana, Op. 16
  • Jörg Widmann Sonatina facile
  • Robert Schumann — Fantasy in C Major, Op. 17

Of particular note is the inclusion of Jörg Widmann’s Sonatina facile alongside Mozart Sonata in C Major, K. 545 as Widmann’s piece is an homage to Mozart’s famous Sonata in C. Not only are the movement headings Allegro – Andante – Rondo identical, but Widmann explores Mozart’s stylistic qualities, while playing with the ideals of Neoclassicism. In the outer movements, the themes from K. 545 appear repeatedly alongside typical figures from the Mozart’s time such as the famous Alberti bass in the accompaniment.

The second of Uchida’s concerts for Union College takes place on Saturday, April 1st.
