Troy Savings Bank Music Hall: Black Violin

Kevin Sylvester says that when most people see a 6-foot-2-inch, 260-pound black man, they don’t expect him to also be a classically trained violinist. An exchange with a woman in an elevator, when he happened to have his instrument with him in its case, drove that point home.

Woman:     What do you play?

Sylvester:   I’m a violinist.

Woman:     Well, obviously you don’t play classical, so what kind of style do you play?

Sylvester says he explained that while he does have a degree in classical music, he plays all kinds of styles.

Crossing boundaries, The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall presents the duo of two classically trained instrumentalists, Kevin Sylvester and Wilner Baptiste, who go by the stage names Kev Marcus and Wil B and collectively as Black Violin.

Kev Marcus plays the violin and Wil B. plays the viola. Black Violin’s seeds were planted years ago when the two met as high school students in Florida. They went to different colleges, then later reconvened as Black Violin. The duo plays a variety of music–relying heavily upon classical music–but is ultimately genre bending blend of classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B, and bluegrass music.

When performing live in concert, the duo accompanied by their incredible band, featuring ace turntable whiz DJ SPS and a drummer.

Through the message of Black Violin’s music, they have spent the last 10 years working to encourage and empower people of all ages, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds to find what connects us, rather than shine a light on what divides us.
