Hubbard Hall’s once again brings opera to the quaint village of Cambridge (NY) with a production of L’elisir d’amore (The elixir of love). With music by Gaetano Donizetti and the Italian libretto by Felice Romani, after Eugène Scribe’s libretto for Daniel Auber’s Le philtre, this romantic comedy is being described as a totally immersive experience. Hilarious. In your face. Fun.

Written over the course of only six weeks in 1832, this romantic comedy remains one of the most-performed operas to this day, due in no small part to highly relatable characters and the ever-relevant theme of falling in love. Willing to try anything to win the affection of the self-motivated and fiercely independent Adina, Nemorino, the young admirer spends a fortune on a “love potion” sold by Dulcamara, a traveling charlatan who capitalizes on the desperate and naive.

Will Adina choose Nemorino, the local villager with nothing to offer but his affections, or Belcore, the confident and cocky military sergeant who is quick to propose and leads a life of adventure? And what of Dulcamara and his potions? You’ll have to go to find out!

The production is directed by Andrew Nienaber and music direction by Maria Sensi Sellner. The cast features:

Sung in Italian with English supertitles, this charismatic classic will make you smile and celebrate the awkward joy of falling in love.
