Glimmerglass Festival: “Xerxes” | Handel, Minato, Stampiglia

The Glimmerglass Festival presents a new production of George F. Händel‘s Xerses, his 35th venture into the opera genre. While Xerxes, or Serse—its Italian title, may have been a flop with its first performance in London in 1738, its enduring “Largo” aria remains one opera lovers’ favorites.  The Italian libretto by Silvio Stampiglia is adapted from one he had written for an earlier opera of the same name by Giovanni Bononcini in 1694. Stampiglia’s libretto, itself, was based on one by Nicolò Minato that was set by Francesco Cavalli in 1654.

Based on the story of Xerxes I of Persia, Xerses is a comic opera in three acts. History’s fierce Persian conqueror turns his attention to domestic affairs in a plot in which romantic attraction threatens to obliterate fraternal loyalty.

In this Glimmerglass production, countertenor John Holiday returns in the title role of what has become one of the most brilliant scores in the Baroque repertory. It is presented in Italian with projected English text.

The creative team is lead by the production’s director Tazewell Thompson and music director Nicole Paiement.
