Glimmerglass Festival: “The Siege of Calais” | Donizetti, Cammarano

Tuesday, August 15th 2017 at 1:30 pm

The Glimmerglass Festival presents its new production of L’assedio di Calais (1836), a lyric melodrama in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti, his 49th opera and the Italian libretto by Salvatore Cammarano. It was based on Luigi Marchionni’s play of the same name, which had been presented in Naples around 1825 and secondarily on Luigi Henry’s ballet, also titled L’assedio di Calais, which had been performed in Naples in 1828 and revived in 1835.

Presented in Italian with projected English text, The Siege of Calais tells the story of courage and self-sacrifice in the year-long Siege of Calais during the Hundred Years’ War inspired artists from Donizetti to Rodin. This production of the rarely-heard Italian bel canto work examines concepts of homeland and heroism in a region that continues to be a backdrop for conflict.

The creative team is lead by the production’s director Francesca Zambello and music director Joseph Colaneri.
