de Blasiis Chamber Music Series: Hui Cox Ensemble with Laura Roth | Bach, Mozart, Gershwin, Ellington, Davis and more

Sunday, September 17th 2017 at 3:00 pm

Pianist Giovannina (Gio) and violinist Virginia (Ginny) de Blasiis, two sisters from a musical family, founded the de Blasiis Chamber Music Series following eight piano programs that Gio gave in 1932 at the home of Mary Hoopes at the request of Charlotte Hyde. Using their various contacts, the de Blasiis sisters were attracted major performers to the area from around the country and abroad. The programming was always innovative, ranging from the romantic and classical to the modern, and consisted of all combinations of instruments being presented.

Keeping true to the series range of programming the de Blasiis Chamber Music Series opens its 2017-18 season with a concert that features 7-string guitar player, composer, and Grammy-nominated producer Hui Cox with his ensemble [Nioka Workman, 'cello; Michael Visio, string bass; and Michael Wimberly, percussion] along with jazz vocalist and cabaret singer Laura Roth. Cox leads the ensemble through improvisational explorations of themes by classical composers known to be great improvisors such as J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven along with music by great 20th Century jazz composers such as Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, and Miles Davis.

The specific program details have not been announced.
