Vocal music communicates truth beyond its lyrics. Certainly, Bach’s music has reached the depths of our beings for centuries. With the artistic direction of Christine Gevert, the Crescendo Chorus & Vocal Ensemble  first concert of its 2017-18 celebrates the legacy of Martin Luther—his own revolutionary music and words in settings of German Renaissance and Baroque motets, choruses and chorales. The program, “Through Truth We Triumph — From Martin Luther to J.S. Bach,” explores the theme by featuring choral works spanning 200 years that are based on eight of Luther’s most famous chorales.

All of the works being performed are based on eight of Luther’s most famous chorales and span a time period of 200 years. Included are works by J.S Bach, Luther, Schutz, Telemann, Praetorius, Walther, and others.

The performers are:

  • Jennifer Tyo and Sarah Fay, sopranos
  • Philip Anderson, tenor
  • Crescendo Chorus and Vocal Ensemble
  • Chris Belluscio, natural trumpet and cornetto
  • Emily Hale, baroque violin
  • Hideki Yamaya, theorbo
  • Jane Hershey, viola da gamba and violone
