Bennington Baroque presents an interesting performance by the Boston-based “English Consort” Seven Times Salt is an early music ensemble specializing in repertoire of the 16th and 17th centuries. Their program, entitled ” The World Turn’d Upside Down” features music from the time of the English Civil War.

The tumultuous years of the English Civil War and Interregnum (1640-1660) produced music that resonated deeply for both commoners and nobility throughout the British Isles. The royalist Cavaliers and Cromwell’s “roundheads” both produced songs that satirized the opposition and promoted their own views or glorified martial heroes. Charles I’s court contained many notable musicians, including viol player and composer William Lawes; he gave his life for the Royalist cause, but not before composing some of the most sublime and bizarre consort music of the 17th century. This program features music by Lawes, Locke, Alfonso Ferrabosco the Younger, selections fromThe Division Violin, and Seven Salts’  own settings of Civil War ballads.

Sevent Times Salt for this performance is:

  • Karen Burciaga, Renaissance violin, treble viol, mezzo-soprano
  • Michael Barrett, tenor and recorder
  • Daniel Meyers, recorders, flutes, bagpipes, percussion, baritone
  • Matthew Wright, lute, cittern, guitar, tenor
  • Josh Schreiber Shalem, viola da gamba, bass
